Ben September Leads With Intent and Rhythm on “Samba”
Ben September returns with “Samba,” a vibrant Afro-influenced R&B single that marks a confident evolution in both sound and storytelling. Known for his emotionally grounded approach to music, Ben leans further into rhythm and movement on this release, introducing a more expressive and dynamic layer to his artistry while maintaining the introspection that defines his work.
At its core, “Samba” is a reflection on love shaped by miscommunication. The song explores the quiet tension between intention and perception, the space where feelings are genuine but not always understood in the way they are meant. Through this, Ben navigates themes of vulnerability, patience, and the emotional effort required to connect meaningfully with another person.
“Samba is about trying to love someone in your own way, even when it’s not always received like that,” Ben explains. “It’s about intention, effort, and the vulnerability that comes with putting your feelings out there.”
Sonically, the track sits at the intersection of contemporary R&B and Afro-inspired rhythms, anchored by a strong samba influence. It is upbeat and percussive, driven by a sense of motion that carries the listener from start to finish. While the production introduces a lighter, more vibrant energy, it remains intentional, ensuring the song’s emotional weight is never lost in the rhythm.
The creative process behind “Samba” was guided more by feeling than structure. Rather than beginning with lyrics or a fixed concept, Ben allowed the rhythm of the beat to lead, responding instinctively and letting the song take shape organically. This approach results in a record that feels fluid and natural, balancing spontaneity with precision.
“The process started with the feeling of the beat,” he says. “Once that energy was there, everything else followed. It was about letting the song take shape on its own.”
A notable layer within the track is Ben’s use of vernacular language, which adds both identity and authenticity to the record. At the same time, it presented a creative challenge, requiring careful attention to ensure the message remained clear while staying true to his voice.
“Having to write in my mother tongue was a bit of a challenge too, but I got it right after a few attempts.”
Hailing from the Vaal, Ben September continues to position himself as part of a new generation of artists redefining Afro-influenced R&B. His work remains rooted in real experiences and honest emotion, while gradually expanding into more rhythm-driven and expressive sonic territories.
With “Samba,” Ben offers more than a standalone release. The single serves as a preview of his upcoming EP and the broader creative direction he is building, one that prioritises both emotional depth and musical movement. It stands as a clear progression in his catalogue, signalling an artist stepping more confidently into his sound, his rhythm, and his intent.
