The SAMA-winning musician embraces creative freedom, self-worth, and the beauty of becoming on an eight-track project shaped by personal growth.
Sometimes, the biggest creative breakthrough happens when you stop trying to prove something and allow yourself to enjoy the process. For Muzz Afrika, that moment has arrived, and he is making music from a place of freedom, self-belief and a renewed appreciation for the journey.
The singer-songwriter, producer, composer, bassist and creative entrepreneur, formerly known as Edgar Muzah, has released his new album, OWN KING, through It Sounds Fresh. The eight-track project arrives after approximately two years of personal growth, reflection and artistic exploration, offering listeners a glimpse into an artist who is permitting himself to evolve.
A SAMA-winning musician who has worked with the likes of Ami Faku, Nathi Mankayi, Amanda Black, Blaq Diamond, Nomcebo Zikode, MXO, Ntsika, Putuma, Willis Wataffi, Ringo Madlingozi and Phila Madlingozi, Muzz Afrika is no stranger to the music industry. But with OWN KING, the focus shifts to something more personal: understanding who you are, appreciating what you bring to the table, and having the confidence to own your journey.
And if the title sounds like a declaration of self-worth, that is precisely the point.
Leading the album is “ENERGY”, a vibrant, accessible Muzz Pop record that introduces the spirit of this new chapter. The song captures that feeling when someone’s presence gets to you in the best possible way, and instead of overthinking it, you simply allow yourself to enjoy the moment.
Interestingly, the single came together unexpectedly during a recording session originally intended for another track. It is a fitting reflection of the creative freedom behind OWN KING: sometimes, the best things happen when you allow the music to take the lead.
“ENERGY represents the confidence, freedom, and positivity I want people to feel through my music,” says Muzz Afrika. “I am having fun with my music again. I want people to feel good and not think for a few minutes. Feel the energy of the song and make it personal to their own stories.”
That renewed sense of enjoyment is central to the album. Following Son Of A Tribe, a project that remains an important part of his musical journey, Muzz Afrika is exploring his sound without feeling restricted by previous expectations.
His musical roots are still there, but this time, there is more room for experimentation, accessible melodies, and different ways of expressing himself. Rather than walking into the studio with something to prove, he drew inspiration from personal reflection, conversations and moments of joy, allowing the music to develop naturally.
For an artist who has spent years contributing to other people’s musical stories, OWN KING feels like an opportunity to put his own evolution front and centre.
For Muzz Afrika, the idea of being your own king has little to do with power or superiority. It is about self-awareness, personal growth and recognising that your journey does not need to look like anyone else’s.
“OWN KING is not about being above anyone. It is about knowing who you are, owning your journey and being brave enough to become the best version of yourself,” he explains. “I genuinely believe this project was given to me; my job was to be humble enough to receive it.”
That philosophy carries through all eight tracks, each exploring a different relationship with identity, healing, celebration, and success.
The album opens with “CORONATION”, setting the tone for a moment of stepping forward and claiming one’s path. “CELEBRATE” follows with a reminder that personal progress deserves recognition, even when there is still a long way to go. Because sometimes, in the rush to reach the next milestone, we forget to appreciate how far we have already come.
On “HEALER”, Muzz Afrika explores music’s ability to offer light and reassurance, while “ENERGY” brings the confidence and freedom of his new creative direction into focus.
Then comes “DURA”, a track with a meaning that reaches beyond its sound. Drawing from the traditional granary used to store harvested crops for nourishment and future planting, the song becomes a metaphor for understanding your own worth.
The message? When you know your granary is full, you do not have to settle for less because you are afraid of running out.
It is an invitation to recognise what you already carry within yourself and make decisions from a place of confidence, rather than scarcity. In a world that constantly encourages comparison, that is a reminder worth sitting with.
One of the album’s most interesting perspectives comes through on “THIS ONE”, where Muzz Afrika challenges the idea that success must be a competition.
Instead of treating achievement as a race in which somebody has to lose for another person to win, the song celebrates collective progress and the belief that there is enough opportunity for everyone. It is a refreshing perspective, particularly in an industry where success can sometimes be measured against who is getting the biggest opportunities, the most recognition, or the loudest applause.
For Muzz Afrika, the victory means more when the people around you get to celebrate, too.
The mood shifts on “HUYA”, which explores romantic attraction, longing, and the desire to be close to someone difficult to resist. Through repeated invitations for a lover to come closer and expressions of devotion, the track captures the excitement of wanting that person near and wanting them alone.
Closing the album is “LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL”, a gentle but meaningful reminder to release what continues to hurt, practise gratitude and appreciate the simple privilege of being alive.
Together, the tracks create a journey that moves between self-discovery, romance, healing and shared success, without losing sight of the album’s central message: there is still plenty to celebrate, even when life gets complicated.
Perhaps the most defining quality of OWN KING is its commitment to positivity. Muzz Afrika deliberately chose not to build the album around sadness. Instead, he wanted to make music that could encourage people through difficult seasons while reminding them that life’s beauty has not disappeared.
That does not mean pretending that challenges do not exist. Rather, the album makes room for the possibility that healing, hope, and happiness can exist alongside them.
“I want people to feel hope,” says Muzz Afrika. “I want someone to hear a song and feel seen, encouraged or simply happy to be alive. Life can be heavy, but there is still so much worth celebrating. If OWN KING helps someone believe in themselves again, then the music has done its job.”
And perhaps that is what makes this chapter particularly interesting. Beyond the new sound and the eight songs, there is an artist rediscovering the joy of creating, trusting his instincts and allowing his experiences to shape the music without defining its limits.
With OWN KING, Muzz Afrika is not simply introducing a new album. He is embracing the freedom to grow, the courage to know his worth, and the beauty of becoming more comfortable in his own skin.
Sometimes, owning your crown starts with realising you never needed anyone else’s permission to wear it.
OWN KING is out now through It Sounds Fresh.
