Mzansi Ex-Offenders: A Raw & Redemptive New Docu-Reality Series Premieres on SABC 2
A powerful new conversation is coming to South African television.
SABC 2 is set to premiere Mzansi Ex-Offenders, a 13-part docu-reality series airing Mondays at 20:00 from 23 March 2026. Hosted by entrepreneur and media personality TT Mbha, the series steps beyond traditional entertainment to explore redemption, reintegration, and the deeply personal journey of rebuilding life after prison.
A Story of Second Chances
Mzansi Ex-Offenders follows real individuals as they fight to reclaim their place within their families and communities after serving time. Set across South Africa’s townships and correctional centres, the series presents a raw and unfiltered look at the psychological toll of estrangement, depression, low self-worth, and displaced anger, while holding space for healing, forgiveness, and transformation.
At its core, the show challenges the often one-dimensional perception of ex-offenders, particularly the notion that they are unfit parents or incapable of change. Each episode features the ex-offender alongside their child (where appropriate), the child’s mother, and extended family and friends, offering layered perspectives on the painful yet courageous process of rebuilding fractured relationships.
Real Lives, Real Reflection
The premiere episode introduces viewers to Ravi Naidoo, a former gang leader who spent 25 years in prison after being sentenced to death and 38 years behind bars.
“I was the leader of the Phoenix 5 gang. I was sentenced to death and 38 years. I spent 6 years on death row and was released after serving 25 years in prison,” he shares. “My reason for participating in the show is to educate young people about the dangers of gangs and drugs. I had to study in prison; I have 3 diplomas to prove to all that nothing stretches the mind like Education. Even though we make mistakes, we can still pick ourselves up and become better people. I pray my testimony on the show will help motivate each one of us to do the right thing.”
His testimony sets the tone for a series rooted in accountability, growth, and the belief that transformation is possible.
Hosted with Purpose
For TT Mbha, hosting the series aligns closely with his broader mission as a social entrepreneur.
“The show unpacks life before, during and after prison, highlighting realities, consequences and the fight to rebuild and belong again,” he says. “As a social entrepreneur and chartered marketer, I aim to celebrate and learn from experiences, building a brighter future for generations to come.”
The project also connects to his Amatyma Brotherhood Circle initiative, which focuses on addressing the physical, mental, and financial wellness needs of men and boys, reinforcing the show’s emphasis on healing and generational impact.
More Than Television
Mzansi Ex-Offenders positions itself as storytelling with heart and relevance. It reflects lived realities while encouraging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about stigma, forgiveness, and the complexity of reintegration into society.
By spotlighting the courage, it takes to mend broken bonds and confront past mistakes, the series invites audiences to think differently and perhaps more compassionately about what it truly means to deserve a second chance.
