From a Stainless Steel Mug to Brand Campaigns: The Story of Thabo De Kreator
by Neontle Mogomotsi
The Rustenburg-based lifestyle and event content creator is turning real-life moments into lasting memories, proving that you do not need perfect conditions to begin building something meaningful.
Before the weddings, event celebrations and brand collaborations, there was a small, rusty shack at his grandmother’s home in Rustenburg. There was no tripod, no ring light, and no professional camera. There was simply a phone, a stainless-steel mug, and a young man who loved documenting his life.
For Thabo De Kreator, that mug was more than an improvised phone stand. It was the beginning of a creative journey that would eventually become his livelihood. Today, the lifestyle and event mobile content creator is building a name for himself by capturing the moments that often go unnoticed: the laughter behind the scenes, the tears at weddings, the aunties on the dance floor, and the unfiltered emotions that make celebrations memorable.
His story is one of resourcefulness, persistence and the determination to create something meaningful with what he has. Now, following a community nomination initiative by In The Room, Thabo has received another reason to reflect on just how far he has come. After his name received the most votes in a Facebook post inviting the Rustenburg community to nominate creatives and personalities deserving of greater visibility, the spotlight turned to the creator whose journey began in that little shack.
For Thabo, the recognition is deeply personal.
“I never thought people were really watching. I was just documenting, just creating because I love it,” he shares. “To know that the same community that saw me start from nothing is now saying, ‘We see you, we recognise you, we appreciate you,’ it means everything to me. It feels like my shack story was not in vain.”
A MUG, A PHONE AND A DREAM
Thabo’s journey into content creation began several years ago at his grandmother’s home, where the conditions were far from ideal. The shack was rusty and dusty. When it rained, water would enter his room. During autumn, soil would find its way inside, making an already difficult environment even more challenging.
But even then, he had a desire to create.
“One day I just woke up and told myself, I’m going to start creating content from this very same shack,” he recalls.
Without a tripod, he improvised. He placed his phone against a stainless-steel mug and began filming.
“That mug was my first tripod. That shack was my first studio. And from there, everything started.”
It is a simple memory, but one that has become central to his understanding of his own journey. What he lacked in equipment, he made up for with determination and a willingness to begin.
For Thabo, content creation was never simply a passing interest. He describes it as his first love, a way to document his experiences, tell his story and preserve the everyday moments that make up a life. That instinct remains at the centre of his work today.
CREATING MEMORIES, NOT JUST CONTENT
Thabo identifies as an event creator, specialising in mobile content that captures weddings, celebrations and events from a more personal perspective. His approach goes beyond the polished highlights. He is interested in what happens around them: the candid exchanges, the emotional reactions, the behind-the-scenes preparations and the moments that might otherwise never be shared.
“I don’t script life. I just document it as it is,” he explains.
That philosophy shapes the way he approaches his work. Whether he is documenting a wedding or capturing everyday life, he wants his content to feel authentic and familiar. He is particularly drawn to the way people celebrate one another, including women and families marking important milestones.
Offline, Thabo describes himself as quiet and observant, someone who loves people and pays attention to the details others might miss. His creative identity is rooted in that observation. He is not simply recording an event; he is preserving the feelings and memories attached to it.
“I’m not just creating content. I am preserving moments people will want to go back to.”
This emphasis on genuine experiences informs his work, even as his opportunities and ambitions continue to grow.
WHEN CONSISTENCY OPENS DOORS
Among Thabo’s proudest milestones is his journey with Cashbuild. He says he was able to renovate through Cashbuild before later collaborating with the brand on a campaign.
For him, the progression from being part of a renovation project to working with the brand professionally was a personal reminder of how far he had come.
“That journey from being part of their project to actually collaborating with them the following year- that growth was very personal for me. It showed me that consistency pays off.”
Another achievement he holds close is being able to make a living from content creation. While he believes his work deserves greater recognition, the fact that his passion now sustains him is something he considers a significant accomplishment.
His experience documenting the wedding of South African content creator Tsontso Hlongwane is another notable part of his journey, bringing him into spaces where his ability to capture real moments can be put to work.
These milestones represent more than professional opportunities. They reflect the possibility of turning a creative passion into a sustainable livelihood, even when the journey begins with very little.
LOVING RUSTENBURG, QUESTIONING ITS OPPORTUNITIES
For all that he has built from his hometown, Thabo believes Rustenburg’s creative community still faces a significant challenge: visibility.
He says creatives from the city, particularly those from surrounding villages and rural communities, are often overlooked despite their consistency and dedication.
“I love Rustenburg; this is home, this is where I started in that tiny shack. But the opportunities and visibility for local talent here are not enough,” he says.
He believes more brands, events and platforms should make a deliberate effort to engage with talent outside the country’s major creative hubs.
The concern is not a lack of ambition among local creatives, but the difficulty of getting their work in front of the right audiences and decision-makers.
Thabo is considering relocating when the time is right, with the hope of expanding his reach and accessing opportunities beyond his current environment. However, he remains passionate about what could be achieved in Rustenburg if local talent received more consistent support.
“We don’t need to move to Joburg to be valid. We can build right here at home if we are given the chance.”
His perspective reflects a broader conversation about the distribution of opportunities in the creative industry and the importance of investing in talent where it already exists.
For Thabo, a stronger local industry would mean more platforms, more collaborations, and more opportunities for creatives to grow together rather than compete for limited visibility.
BUILDING A BRAND BEYOND THE VIEWS
Thabo’s ambitions extend beyond creating content for social media. He wants to establish himself as a businessman, build a lasting brand and eventually create opportunities for other young creatives, particularly those from villages who may struggle to see a path into the industry. He hopes to develop projects that help emerging talent access the same kinds of opportunities he has worked towards.
Brand partnerships are also part of his vision. His dream list includes household names such as Sunlight, Coca-Cola, Domestos, Comfort, Handy Andy and McDonald’s.
These are brands he associates with everyday life and products he says he already uses and loves. He wants any future collaborations to feel like a natural extension of the life he documents rather than advertising disconnected from his personality.
“I believe I have the audience and the authenticity for household brands, because I am literally the household, the guy who cleans, who cooks, who celebrates, who documents real life.”
It is a pitch rooted in his creative identity: relatable storytelling, everyday experiences, and an audience invited to connect with the person behind the content.
As he looks ahead, Thabo plans to continue developing his storytelling, pursuing new collaborations and documenting more of the weddings, lifestyle moments and daily experiences that have become his signature. He also wants to create more opportunities to celebrate people from Rustenburg, using his platform to help others gain visibility.
A MESSAGE TO THE NEXT CREATOR
When asked what he would tell young creatives who have ideas but do not know where to start, Thabo returns to the lesson his own journey has taught him.
Start with what you have. His first studio was a shack. His first tripod was a stainless-steel mug. He did not have professional equipment or a perfect setting, but he had a phone, a story, and the willingness to begin.
He encourages aspiring creators to remain consistent, even when engagement is low, and to keep creating without waiting for external validation.
He also believes local creatives must make an effort to support one another by sharing each other’s work, engaging with one another’s content, and building stronger relationships within their community.
“The world might not see us yet, but we can see each other.”
It is a message that brings his story back to where it began: a young man documenting his life because he loved creating, long before he knew where it might lead.
His journey is still unfolding, and he knows there is more work ahead. But the distance between that first improvised phone stand and the opportunities he has since secured is a reminder that beginnings do not have to be perfect to be meaningful.
For Thabo De Kreator, the aim is no longer just to document his own life. It is to build a brand, tell stories that matter, and help others believe their circumstances do not have to determine their possibilities.
And perhaps that is the most enduring lesson of his story: sometimes, all it takes to begin is a phone, a stainless steel mug, and the courage to press record.
