Award-Winning Drama Spinners Head to Mzansi Magic and e.tv Ahead of Highly Anticipated Season 2
If you missed one of South Africa’s most celebrated television dramas when it first premiered, now is your chance to experience the series everyone has been talking about.
The critically acclaimed Spinners is set to reach even more audiences as Season 1 makes its debut on Mzansi Magic from 30 August before arriving on e.tv on 4 September, giving both DStv and free-to-air viewers the opportunity to catch up before the highly anticipated second season premieres later this year.
Created by Benjamin Hoffman and directed by Jaco Bouwer, Spinners tells the gripping story of Ethan (played by Cantona James), a 17-year-old from the Cape Flats whose life is shaped by poverty, gang violence and the responsibility of caring for his younger brother. Everything changes when he discovers the adrenaline-fuelled world of spinning, South Africa’s unique motorsport culture, which offers him a chance to rewrite his future.
More than just a crime drama, Spinners explores themes of family, survival, ambition and hope, delivering an authentic portrayal of life in the Cape Flats while celebrating the resilience of its characters.
Produced by Federation MEAC and Native At Large, the CANAL+ and MultiChoice co-production has become one of South Africa’s biggest television success stories. The series made history as the first African production selected to compete at the 2023 Canneseries Festival, before going on to win Best TV Series at the Dakar Series Awards and triumph over HBO’s Emmy-winning Succession at the Shanghai TV Festival. Locally, it received a standing ovation during its sold-out Silwerskerm premiere and went on to collect multiple SAFTA Awards.
The show’s expansion to both Mzansi Magic and e.tv reflects a shared commitment to making premium South African storytelling accessible to even more viewers.
“Spinners struck a chord with audiences from the moment it launched. Bringing Season 1 to even more screens gives more South Africans the chance to discover this incredible story and connect with its unforgettable characters. As we gear up for Season 2, we want the whole country to be part of the journey,” says Nomsa Philiso, Executive Vice President: Content, CANAL+ Africa.
e.tv Chief Content Officer Marlon Davids says the partnership is another important step in celebrating local storytelling.
“Partnerships of this calibre between leading broadcasters are instrumental in elevating South African storytelling. At e.tv, we’ve seen how audiences continue to embrace the wide variety of content we bring to screen.”
With its compelling performances, high-octane action sequences and emotionally charged storytelling, Spinners has firmly established itself as one of South Africa’s standout television productions. For those who missed its original run or simply want to relive the journey, this is the perfect opportunity to catch up before Season 2 arrives.
