Season 2 of Amalanga Awafani Returns With a Harder Truth About Survival, Identity, and Starting Over

There’s something deeply unsettling about watching people lose everything they once believed defined them; the money, the status, and the certainty. And season 2 of Amalanga Awafani is stepping right into that discomfort.

Returning to SABC1 on Monday, 25 May 2026 at 18:30, the hit telenovela moves away from the familiar rhythms of Nquthu and into the chaos, pressure and unpredictability of Johannesburg. But this is not a glamorous fresh start, it’s survival.

After losing everything, former Maskandi stars and millionaires Sabelo and his twin sister Thembi are forced to rebuild their lives in a city that rarely slows down for anyone. Played by Fanele Zulu and Nsikelelo Mthiyane, the twins enter season 2 carrying grief, trauma and the heavy consequences of past choices.

And from the very beginning, the series makes it clear that peace will not come easily.

The opening moments throw viewers straight into panic. Sabelo trapped inside a car boot somewhere in Johannesburg, struggling for air as the vehicle violently swerves through the city streets. It’s dark, claustrophobic and symbolic of the emotional spiral that follows throughout the season.

What continues to make Amalanga Awafani stand out is how honestly it explores themes many young Africans quietly wrestle with: failure, identity, mental health, financial pressure and the painful reality of starting over when life does not go according to plan.

This season asks an uncomfortable question: what happens when the dream collapses?

Fan favourites Brian Khumalo and Amandla Dladla return as Sugarbasin and Stha, while a powerful new family dynamic is introduced through the Dumas. New cast additions include Ncibijana Madlala as Zaqheqhe Duma, Sannah Mchunu as Majele, Thokozani Nzima as Sandlasenkosi Duma, Zazi Kunene as Ntando Duma, Craig Nobela as Fenda, Aramis Ngwenya as Sfuba and Ayanda Phambana as Nobesuthu Duma. Sipho Mbele also joins the story as the nosy neighbour Mahlangu.

Episode 1 – Monday, 25 May 2026

The season opens with a flash-forward of Sabelo being chased through Johannesburg before taking viewers back three weeks earlier. During Gumede’s ukujikijela ritual, Sabelo becomes overwhelmed by traumatic memories and suffers a mental breakdown. At the same time, Ntombi struggles financially in the aftermath of Gumede’s death and even turns to Stha for help.

Episode 2- Tuesday, 26 May 2026

Sabelo wakes up mentally trapped in the past, believing MaDuma is still alive and that recent events never happened. When Xoli calls him crazy, he lashes out violently, forcing Gogo Gumede to seek spiritual intervention from Dlamuka. Meanwhile, Ntombi discovers that Gumede had a life insurance policy.

Episode 3- Wednesday, 27 May 2026

Dlamuka explains that Sabelo is not bewitched, but spiritually disconnected from his maternal family, the Dumas. Thembi refuses to reach out to them, seeing them as strangers rather than family. Elsewhere, Ntombi’s excitement over Gumede’s R2 million life cover quickly turns into devastation when she learns she is not listed as a beneficiary.

Episode 4 – Thursday, 28 May 2026

Doctors advise psychiatric observation for Sabelo as his condition worsens, but Thembi refuses to let him be admitted. Ntombi becomes emotionally consumed by Gumede excluding her from the policy, while Mam’Sara encourages her to fight for the money. At the same time, MaNgubane and Xoli steal Thembi’s phone, and her bank card declines at the doctor’s office, revealing just how quickly everything around her is collapsing.

Episode 5 – Friday, 29 May 2026

Thembi discovers that all her assets have been seized after missing court proceedings, leaving her financially ruined. In a desperate attempt to protect Sabelo from emotional triggers, she sedates him and removes Gumede’s tombstone. But the week ends with yet another shocking moment as Ntombi arrives in Nquthu demanding Gumede’s money, only for the women to discover the graves completely flattened.

Heavy, emotional and deeply rooted in both family and culture, season 2 looks set to deliver more than just drama. It’s a story about survival, pride, grief and the terrifying uncertainty of having to begin again.

Amalanga Awafani returns Monday, 25 May 2026, airing weekdays at 18:30 on SABC1 and streaming on SABC Plus.
