A Voice That Defined Generations: SABC 2 Honours Wilson B. Nkosi's 40-Year Broadcasting Legacy

In a tribute to one of South Africa’s most enduring broadcast voices, SABC 2 is set to premiere a special documentary honouring the life and legacy of Wilson B. Nkosi, marking an extraordinary 40-year milestone in the industry.

Titled Wilson B. Nkosi, the documentary will air on Sunday, 10 May 2026 at 21h30, offering audiences an intimate look into the journey of a man whose voice has become synonymous with South African radio.

From the launch of METRO FM in 1986, Nkosi has remained a defining presence on the airwaves. Entering broadcasting at just 19 years old, he quickly established himself as a compelling voice, seamlessly transitioning into television within a year. Over the decades, he has evolved into a cultural mainstay, hosting some of the country’s most beloved programmes, including Sounds and Stuff Like That, while also building a respected career as a DJ and master of ceremonies across South Africa.

The documentary, The Life and Times of Wilson B. Nkosi, traces his origins, exploring the formative experiences, influences, and personal stories that shaped both the man and the broadcaster. It offers a rare glimpse into his upbringing, the mentors who guided him, and the passion that fuelled his pursuit of a career in media.

Beyond personal reflection, the film positions Nkosi’s journey within the broader context of the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s legacy, highlighting the organisation’s role in nurturing and sustaining local talent. Nkosi’s career stands as a powerful testament to the impact of long-term investment in creative excellence.

Reflecting on his journey, Wilson B. Nkosi shares: “I thank those who took a chance on me. Those who gave a childhood dream a fighting chance. Above all, I thank the listener for trusting me with their time. I’m a child of METRO FM, I grew up here, and I have spent more than two-thirds of my life at the SABC.

His accolades underscore a career defined by excellence and longevity, including the South African Voice-over Lifetime Achievement Award (2025) and the GQ Men of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award (2024), among numerous honours from both cultural and governmental institutions.

More than a celebration of achievements, the documentary serves as a source of inspiration for emerging broadcasters, a story grounded in resilience, humility, and unwavering dedication to craft.

In his own words, Nkosi remains grounded despite decades of success: “I am a simple and ordinary person from a simple and ordinary place… at most and at best, I am an average person with above-average aspirations, goals, wishes, plans, ambitions, hopes and dreams.

As audiences prepare to tune in, this moment stands not only as a celebration of a remarkable career but as a recognition of a voice that has helped shape the soundscape of South African radio for four decades.
