An Ode To Motown – A Soul-Stirring Afternoon at Joburg Theatre
There’s something about Motown that instantly wraps around you like nostalgia. Smooth harmonies, timeless lyrics, and that unmistakable groove. On Sunday, 22 February 2026, in the afternoon, that magic came alive at the Mandela Theatre with An Ode to Motown, and what an experience it was.
Conceptualised and directed by James Ngcobo, the production is a heartfelt tribute to the golden era of Motown. From the very first note, the audience was transported to a time when music was rich with soul, storytelling, and undeniable rhythm.
Under the musical direction of Margaret Motsage and choreography by Lulu Mlangeni, the show felt polished yet deeply personal; a seamless blend of live vocals, tight harmonies, and choreography that paid respect to the Motown era while still feeling fresh.
The cast: Tamara Dey, Anele Precious Mthethwa, Lerato Mvelase, Hlengiwe Pearl, and Liesl Penniken, delivered an afternoon of pure musical excellence.
And can we talk about Lerato Mvelase?
Known and loved for her work on screen, seeing her step into this musical space was genuinely surprising in the best way possible. Who knew she could sing like that? Her voice carried both strength and vulnerability, commanding the stage while still feeling intimate. It’s always refreshing to witness artists step outside of what we think we know about them, and Lerato did exactly that.
Each performer brought their own texture to the production. The harmonies were tight, the solos were powerful, and the chemistry on stage felt authentic. There was a sense of joy that moved from the performers straight into the audience. Heads were nodding, feet tapping, and at times, the theatre felt less like a seated performance and more like a soulful celebration.
What stood out most was how the show honoured the legacy of Motown without trying too hard. It trusted the music. It trusted the voices. And that’s what made it work.
An Ode To Motown isn’t just a concert, it’s a reminder of how timeless good music really is. An afternoon well spent, filled with nostalgia, talent, and a few beautiful surprises.
If you’re a lover of soul, harmony and music that makes you feel something, this one is definitely worth experiencing.
